What is LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) is a facilitated process where participants use LEGO bricks to build metaphorical models of ideas, thoughts, challenges, and hopes. In each build, participants physically construct a three dimensional representation of something abstract (a belief, a possibility, a barrier, a goal etc) and then tell the story behind their creation.

Because we engage hands, minds, and stories, LSP taps into a form of “hand knowledge”, ideas that emerge as you build rather than just think. The method grew from learning theory  and organisational development, and has become an open-source methodology (since 2010) that we practitioners worldwide can use freely.

While LEGO® is often seen as a toy, in LSP it becomes a powerful tool for unlocking insight, dialogue, and commitment, especially in complex, ambiguous or emotional topics.

Why use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?

LSP offers several advantages over more conventional workshop formats:

Equal voice & psychological safety: Because everyone builds and everyone shares stories from their model, every participant has a visible, concrete “voice” in the conversation. It reduces dominance by senior voices or more vocal personalities.

Visual, tangible thinking: Ideas become physical, which often surfaces nuance, connections, or gaps that stay hidden in verbal-only discussion.

Metaphor & innovation: Because builds are metaphorical, participants can explore challenging or systemic topics in less threatening ways. That fosters more imaginative solutions.

Deeper engagement and commitment: People tend to “own” the ideas they’ve built and shared. That leads to stronger buy-in, clarity, and momentum afterward.

Versatility: It works for team building, strategy, alignment, problem-solving, visioning, change, and culture work. The same structure can be adapted to many organisational needs.

How does it work?

Though each session is bespoke, the core LSP process tends to follow a simple rhythm: Challenge > Build > Share > Reflect

Frame a challenge: The facilitator poses a “build question” to stimulate thinking (e.g. “Build a model of what our team at its best looks like”).

Build: Each participant builds independently, using LEGO bricks, to represent their response to the question.

Share: Participants present their models, explain the meanings, and tell the stories behind them.

Reflect: Together, the team looks for patterns, insights, tensions, or themes. The facilitator shapes the conversation, threads the metaphors, and surfaces underlying assumptions.

In a session with multiple builds, you might move from personal reflection to team-level models and ultimately a shared vision or strategic model. The builds are meticulously sequenced so that earlier ones inform later ones.

A facilitator guides the sequence, timing, and metaphor framing, ensuring the process stays on track while still allowing space for insights to emerge.

How do I book?

Booking is straightforward:

Get in touch: Use my contact form to share your basic details (team size, desired date, overall goals, and anything else you’d like to share).

Introductory meetings: After we’ve agreed to progress, I’ll meet (virtually or in person) up to three times with your team leaders or key stakeholders. These meetings help clarify objectives, decide on structure, and confirm logistics. (If we need more meetings, that’s fine 3 meetings is just a guide)

Proposal & agreement: I send you a workshop design proposal, schedule, and quote. Once we agree, we lock in the date and confirm delivery.

Preparation & delivery: I prepare materials, design the build challenges, and facilitate the session. I bring all the equipment (and Lego of course!) on the day. I guide the team through the builds, reflections, and outputs.

Debrief & follow-up: After the session, I often support you with capturing insights or  translating the output of your models into action plans..
